Ann Dougherty - Language Arts

Mrs. Dougherty earned her Bachelor’s degree from Mansfield State University and her teaching certification along with a Master’s degree from Millersville State University. She pursued doctoral coursework at Widener University and was recognized as a Writing and Literature Fellow at West Chester University. Formerly a high school teacher in Pennsylvania, she relocated to Florida in 2006 where she continues her teaching career here at FSWC. Mrs. Dougherty has a passion for renovating houses, devouring books, exploring Alaska, and embracing Florida’s sunshine.

She teaches English Honors II where students explore complex ideas through writing. They engage in a blend of inquiry-based and project-based learning to deepen their knowledge and skills. The curriculum emphasizes extensive investigation and response to intricate and thought-provoking issues, rather than straightforward topics. By reading distinguished literature, including novels, students gain insights into both themselves and society. British author E.M. Forster expressed it so sensibly: “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?” This encapsulates the notion that writing clarifies thought. Through reading, critical thinking, writing, and discussion, students are prepared not only for their roles in the world but also for the state-required F.A.S.T. and B.E.S.T. tests and the dual enrollment college placement exams.

Mrs. Dougherty also teaches two electives. In the fall semester, students enrolled in the Critical Thinking through the Arts course delve into art history and learn to paint with acrylics, trying their hand at replicating renowned artworks. The spring Critical Thinking through the Arts class takes an entirely student-collaborative approach to the development of the curriculum which centers around fundamental sewing skills. Previous classes have engaged in quilting, dress design using unusual or recycled materials, crocheting to craft pom-pom hats, and sewing practical yet charming tote bags.

Remember to join Mrs. Dougherty and students - freshmen to seniors - for the Jewelry Club after school every Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 in room T-139. Learn to create  beautiful, innovative, and traditional jewelry pieces, perfect for gifts for holidays, birthdays, and special occasions, or to keep for yourself.
